When we go shopping, most things come from the little stalls and hole-in-the-wall grocery stores on Gokulam Street (which the boys still call ‘the market’, as we haven’t been down to the famous Mysore Market yet). We have a little routine already: on the way there, we stop at the coconut stall, where we have at least one green coconut each (it takes about 2.5 to satisfy Felix). Then we do the shopping, punctuated by exclamations over things that happen in the street (usually involving cows – the boys haven’t stopped saying ‘look, there’s a cow!’ yet). Before going home, we stop at the chai stall, where the boys are allowed one chai and sometimes a coconut bikkie. The chais are produced in little glasses as soon as we arrive, and approximately two minutes later a second man arrives with an empty glass for each boy, into which he pours half their chai to help it cool. It’s like clockwork every time.
